1:15 The family living plastic-free

After attending a talk on how to live zero-waste six months ago, Paekakariki resident Rachel Benefield decided she should try doing a grocery shop plastic-free.

She was surprised at just how easy it was and since then hasn't looked back. Her family of five, plus two cats and a dog, stopped buying single-use plastics and started filling up paper bags with all the food and essentials they need.

It's not only made them feel like they're reducing their waste footprint, they also found other benefits, like eating better and actually having money left over for family treats. We talk to Rachel about whether it's actually do-able.

You can follow the family's plastic-free journey, and get some tips on how to do it yourself here.

1:25 A new blue!

Blue cheese is one of those foods that people either love or hate. Those who love it are continually searching for more pungent, more intense blue vein.

Normally when we think of cheese making we think of France but very soon there'll be a new blue on the market, the cheese not only made here but the mould itself uncovered in the Mackenzie district.

The unique blend is the only one of its kind in Australasia and it was created after cheese makers took part in what's been called "culture bio-prospecting".

Simon Berry, chief executive of Whitestone Cheese and one of the team that made this discovery, tells us more.

1:35 Breaking into the literary world of teen sci-fi

The teen book game is a huge market, the number of young adult fiction books published has more than doubled in the last decade. Not to mention the movies...

Now a kiwi author, has broken into that market with her sci-fi novel Air Born - and she's just signed off the rights for a screen adaptation of it.

And it all started after Jessica Pawley self published an e-book, where she gained a huge fanbase of teens.
