David Steemson's Auckland Story - Pamir Old Salts

From Afternoons, 3:35 pm on 8 July 2009

The four masted barque was built in Germany in the early 1900's. But by the second world war she was owned by a Finnish shipping company. Then after Germany invaded Finland, the Pamir was seized by the NZ government when she arrived in Wellington in August 1941. Pamir then sailed under the New Zealand flag for ten voyages over the following eight years, before being returned to Finland to join her sister ship the Passat after the war. I've been down to the exhibition to join two New Zealanders who sailed on Pamir, George Gunn and Pat Ross.
