Sparkle in the Rain was the first big commercial success for the Scottish rock band SIMPLE MINDS. The band had formed in 1977 and had very much been a part of the 'new wave' of music - using synthesizers and electronically generated music.  This brought them a significant loyal following. Their live performances in the summer leading up to the release of Sparkle in the Rain had heralded a change in sound - from the art-school 'new-wave' to a bigger 'stadium-rock' sound.  The move paid off and the album reached number 1 in the  in New Zealand and in the UK and hit the top 20 in a number of countries worldwide including the Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, Canada and Germany.
