The National Party is proposing sending youth offenders' to boot camps. The Head of Research for the Morgan Foundation, Dr Jess Berentson Shaw says the policy is a teachable moment to show a classic example of bad science.

She says mutliple trials have been run to test which interventions work, and those that do involve psychological support and skill development, mulitple co-ordinated services for young people and their families and resortative interventions.

Dr Berentson-Shaw says regardless of the National party's intent the boot camp policy based on a mistaken belief that a punitive response to anti-social behaviours works, and the policy will harm children.

She explains why.
