From Jesse Mulligan, 1–4pm, 1:15 pm on 6 September 2017

The US and the Caribbean is being battered by Hurricane Irma after it was upgraded to a category five storm making it extremely dangerous.

Winds of up to 290 kilometres an hour have been recorded making it the most powerful storm the Atlantic has seen in over a decade.

The US National hurricane centre has warned that it is too early to predict the path or the effects on the mainland.
