The flu season in North America has been a particularly bad one, with concerns that the vaccines available are not as protective as in past years.
Health authorities in the US and Canada say the flu vaccine is only 25 percent effective against the H3N2 strain, which is likely to hit New Zealand as well.
The World Health Organisation has recommended that a vaccine for that strain be included in the Southern Hemisphere flu shots.
