Taumarunui is a service town and shopping centre in the middle of the North Island. In fact it's the largest town in the Ruapehu District, a lively community of just under 5,000 located at the confluence of the Whanganui and Ongarue Rivers. This year it celebrates its centenary, but it was an important centre for Maori long before European settlement.
