If you think Whangamomona is a bit out of the way, then think again. Just a few kilometres away, down what has to be one of the worst roads in the country is the abandoned settlement of Aotuhia. Founded at the very start of the twentieth century, the last settler left the area just forty years later, driven out by the weather, a series of devastating economic crises and the awful loneliness of life in this nearly inaccessible eastern Taranaki valley.
