Your Place - Wyndham

From Afternoons, 1:23 pm on 9 December 2010

On 'Your place' we are visiting a small country town in Eastern Southland just 45 kilometers from Invercargill and 25 south of Gore. The original Maori name for the area was Mokoreta; clear, sweet water. Probably bestowed because of three rivers that practically surround this township of just 700. It was originally surveyed in 1869 and became a town district in 1882, named for General Sir Charles Ashe Wyndham who fought in the Crimean War. Many of the streets are also named for events, places, battles and personalities from that war: Balaclava, Raglan, Cardigan and amp; Nightingale.
