Apple and Pear tree-burning protests in Australia

From Afternoons, 2:06 pm on 29 July 2011

Apple and pear growers in Victoria have held a mass rally burning dead trees to symbolise what they say will happen to their industry when the ban on NZ apples is lifted About 2 thousand people gathered in Greater Shepparton to protest against the relaxation of restrictions against apples imported from New Zealand. Their concern is that the New Zealand apples will bring the disease, fire blight among them. One who took part in lighting the giant bonfire was Greater Shepparton Mayor, Councillor Geoff Dobson.
