Thomas Edsall is a former Washington Post political editor. He's a columnist for The New York Times and a professor of journalisim at Columbia University. His book, 'The Age of Austerity: How Scarcity Will Remake American Politics' argues that partisan politics, and the stubborn refusal of the left and right to compromise, is bad now and will get worse.
