Interisland ferry 50th

From Afternoons, 2:24 pm on 13 August 2012

Fifty years ago today, the Aramoana made it's maiden voyage from Wellington to Picton launching the first roll on roll off ferry service between the North and South Islands. In 1968, 53 people died when the Wahine capsized at the entrance to Wellington Harbour. John Brown was one of the rescuers that day, and he went on to serve as a ferry captain on the Interislander for 30 years.
