The fortieth anniversary of Alf's Imperial Army

From Afternoons, 2:06 pm on 29 July 2013

It's been forty years of making war, not love, for one of New Zealand's most unusual pacifist societies. It was the early 1970s when Ian Brackenbury Channell, aka The Wizard of New Zealand, formed Alf's Imperial Army as an antidote to the increasingly militaristic measures being adopted by the various activist factions on campus. Though it was established to 'increase the peace' the group embraced the art of war from the outset, and was itself embraced by generations of Kiwis, somewhat to the surprise of its creator who's spent the last four decades watching regiments spring up around the country.
