Your Place - Ranfurly

From Afternoons, 1:25 pm on 8 August 2013

Located in rough, dry country 430 metres above sea level and 110 kilometres from Dunedin, Ranfurly was a gold rush town in the 1860s, but not a very important one and not that big until the Otago Central Railway was extended in the late 1890s. There was a building boom in the 1930s with many of those buildings still reflecting the art deco style popular at the time. Just 730 residents were counted at the last census, but tourism has been breathing new life into the community.
