A New Zealander has set a new speed record for free climbing the world famous 2307 metre granite Nose of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park in California. She and her climbing partner raced up the steep granite monolith is just five hours and 39 minutes, shaving nearly two hours off her old record. The only rope she uses is for safety - to prevent a fall - but she doesn't use it to climb at all. She has two other records in her sights, including plans to become the first woman to free-climb the technically difficult link-up of El Capitan and the Half Dome formation in under 24 hours. But the US government shutdown may skuttle those plans.
