Your place - Egmont Village

From Afternoons, 1:23 pm on 5 December 2013

We visit a village on State Highway Three, in North Taranaki. It straddles the Waiwhakaiho River and Mangaoraka Stream 12 kilometres to the south-east of New Plymouth. The settlement dates back to the early 1870s when a local farmer planted trees along the many river banks in the area. The local school, still flourishing, dates back to 1877. This is one of the few places in the Dominion to incorporate the word Village into it's name but, unlike Mount Cook Village which has no permanent residents, this one is growing fast. There's been a 22 per cent increase in population since 2006.
