Topics - A Tech startup with help from MIT is launching a new device that transforms almost any bicycle into an electric-hybrid vehicle using an app on a smartphone. The device, called the Copenhagen Wheel, is installed as part of a rear hub of a bike wheel and is packed with a proprietary computer, batteries and sensors that monitor how hard a rider is pedaling and activate an onboard motor whenever support is needed. A study has found one in five patients who turn up in New Zealand hospital emergency departments in the small hours of the morning are there because of alcohol. The "snapshot" survey by the Australasian College for Emergency Services found 18 per cent of emergency patients were "there as a result of the harmful use of alcohol".
