From Jesse Mulligan, 1–4pm, 3:09 pm on 3 February 2014

Historian and New York University professor Greg Grandin explores the slave trade in the Americas in the early 19th century in a new book of his called The Empire of Necessity: Slavery, Freedom, and Deception in the New World. In particular, he looks at the slave rebellion aboard the Spanish slave ship Tryal in February 1805 when, for 53 days, slaves became the captors and captors the slaves.
