It's where the arid Central Otago Lakes region meets the rain-forested West Coast of the South Island. Makarora is made up of three small settlements stretched along State Highway 6, about halfway between Wanaka and Haast. There's just one road in and one road out - and it's not uncommon for the resourceful 80 or so residents to be isolated by slips or floods for days.
