Bannockburn, a small historic gold-mining town located outside of Cromwell in Central Otago. It was that rich alluvial gold field that first attracted Europeans and a number of Asians in the 1860s. Many of them chose to settle on higher ground, away from the rising water levels of the Clutha and Kawerau rivers. Plans for the actual township were drawn up in 1862, and by 1868 the original settlement was strung out along what is now the Bannockburn-Nevis road.
