The history of cameras and surveillance

Surveillance has been in the spotlight itself recently, especially surveillance of journalists. An overseas guest at the upcoming Auckland Art Fair created a whole exhibition around surveillance for the Tate Modern in London, calling it Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance, and the Camera Since 1870. Sandra Phillips is the curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Lynn Freeman talks to her about the history of cameras and surveillance.
