NZ drug importer in prison in Indonesia found with drugs in cell

From Checkpoint, 6:15 pm on 3 November 2016

The lawyer for a New Zealander locked up in a Balinese prison has confirmed his client tested positive for cannabis and had drugs in his cell.

Antony de Malmanche was sentenced to a 15-year jail term last year for being caught with 1.7kg of crystal meth in his backpack when he flew into Bali in 2014.

His lawyer, Craig Tuck, said the new prison governor has cracked down on contraband in the prison, which was well-known for being awash with drugs.

Mr Tuck said guards found cellphones and drugs when searching de Malmanche's cell.

"Then they conducted a urine test.

"Tony ... [tested] positive for cannabis and there is an ongoing investigation in the prison."

He said he was yet to speak to de Malmanche, but understood he had denied using cannabis.
