The Flying Nun Pub Quiz

From Flying Nun Records, 9:00 am on 6 September 2011

In May 2004 a gaggle of celebrities, music hacks and train spotters gathered in front of a live and lubricated audience to test their knowledge in the specialist topic: artists and songs associated with New Zealand's premier independent record label, Flying Nun.

With over 22 years worth of questions, you can beat the buzzer at home if you know the name of the Straitjacket Fits second album, which band that celebrity keyboard player really belongs to, or the title of the first ever Flying Nun DVD. A New Zealand Music Month event exclusive to National Radio.

Media Release Friday 30 April, 2004

Here at Flying Nun Records we'd like to take the time out to congratulate ourselves on making our very first DVD, called Very Short Films, which is released on May 10th.

However, as is always the case, we just don't have the time, so you are going to have to do it for us.

Tell you what, we'll even provide the time and the place to do this! But wait, there's more in store - we'll also provide some entertaining entertainment for you.

The Inaugural Flying Nun Pub Quiz

8pm Wednesday May 19th - Kings Arms Tavern, Auckland

Two teams will go head to head in a battle of the brainboxes, in a brave attempt at providing a great night out for the public, who will also have a chance to win spot prizes - we have copies of the new DVD and bar tabs to just give away!

Our MC and your host for the evening, Oliver Driver will keep the teams apart and maintain some semblance of...drama throughout the night.

The Quizmaster for the evening is Andrew 'Hat' Meier - as host of the Freak The Sheep NZ Music Show, he's no slouch when it comes to asking the hard questions about NZ music! He's Lockwood Smith by any other name! (Judge's decision will be final, no correspondence, etc)

The teams have been confirmed:

Team One

Russell Brown - localised media commentator and Quiz Team Captain

Grant Fell - out of Headless Chickens

Alan Holt - out of the old Flying Nun office

Team Two

Lesley Paris - out of Look Blue Go Purple, the old Flying Nun office and Quiz Team Captain

Chris Knox - out of Grey Lynn

Russell Baillie - localised music commentator and out of Granny Herald (what a stayer)

Well, that's the pitch. No wait, there's more - the fine people at National Radio are taping the whole thing for broadcast a few days later, edited for length and brevity - and quite possibly for reasons of broadcasting standards.

So, if you are elsewhere in the country, tune in and see if you can beat the buzzer - on the radio!
