Good Friday for Friday 21 March 2008

Producer: Robyn Rockgirl Walker

Maggie BarryMaggie Barry (pictured left) explores issues that New Zealand families face everyday...

First, we learn how to encourage kids to grow and cook their own food with chef Stephanie Alexander, what it's like in the modern-day Girl Guide & Scout movements, and how experiences like Outward Bound extend children's horizons.

From nine to ten, we look at the success of the Weetbix Tryathalon and how SPARC is working hard to get children actively away from watching television and playing computer games. We then touch base with the Children's Commissioner, Cindy Kiro, about the key strategies dealing with the country's more serious childhood issues.

From ten till eleven, we catch the Reading Bug with author Paul Jennings and then look how to help children build their visual appreciation and creativeness. We also get the low-down on JK Rowling's Harry Potter series from an honest bunch of critics, our group of pre-teens who will pop in and out throughout the morning.

In the final hour we have a panel discussion offering practical advice for parents on how to raise kiwi kids in this era of 'no-smacking'.
