Much of downloading of music and movies from the Internet breaches copyright law

Earlier this year New Zealanders blacked out their Facebook pages and protested outside Parliament at a law that proposed the termination of Internet accounts for people who repeatedly infringed copyright regulations.

Those in favour of the law say illegal downloading is killing the film and music industries.

But those passionate about Internet accessibility say the proposals were far too harsh.

The incoming National government put the disputed legislation on ice, but now it's beginning the task of finding a replacement for the S.92A clause in the Copyright Act.

Kim Griggs explores what, if any, compromise will be possible.
