3:00 Classic Concert: Dinah Jams

Recorded in 1954, this show features the Clifford Brown/Max Roach band with Maynard Ferguson, backing a 30 year Dinah. Equally comfortable and masterful singing jazz or rhythm and blues, she croons and swings through a sweeping set that includes "Lover Come back To Me", "Rain Or Shine and an eleven minute version of "You Go To Head" that showcases the excellent band. Allmusic describes her voice as "gritty, salty, high-pitched, marked by absolute clarity of diction and with clipped, bluesy phrasing" (Polygram)

'Matinee Idle is Radio New Zealand's Mufti Day. They let me and Simon "loose in the asylum". We get to be the guys testing the outer limits of listener patience and we benignly abuse this privilege.' says O'Brien. 'They let us play whatever we want! It's every radio presenter's dream.'
