Milk tankers will be able to start using Kaikoura's only access road, the Inland Route, from today - weather permitting.
Essential freight is also being given priority on the road, which is considered fragile and hazardous.
Meanwhile the owners of more than 300 rental vehicles and tourists buses abandoned after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake also hope to start getting their vehicles back today.
