David Shearer to quit Parliament for UN post

Labour MP David Shearer is to to quit parliament to take up the job of leading the United Nations mission in South Sudan.

That will mean a by-election in his Mt Albert electorate early next year.

Foreign Minister Murray McCully says Mr Shearer is the only candidate for the job and his appointment is likely to be formally confirmed by the United Nations within days.
