They live in Hikuai at the base of the Coromandel- about five kilometres south of Tairua and Pauanui - which were cut off overnight.
Talking to Morning Report last night he said "I woke up in the pitch black and the noise on the roof of where I live was deafening. I went to slide out of bed and the water was literally three or four inches below the top of my mattress".
