The Fitzroy river which winds through the city is already flooded after torrential rain from Cyclone Debbie but is forecast to keep rising until Wednesday.
9 News reporter Jessica Millward is in Rockhampton. She told Morning Report local residents about 5,000 properties are expected to be affected when flood rivers peak on Wednesday.
She says many residents are choosing to remain and sandbag their homes, but others are getting out.
