PM reacts to North Korea-US tension; Signals pay equity announcement

NORTH KOREA / US TENSIONS

The United States vice-president Mike Pence says his country's "era of strategic patience" with North Korea is over.

Mr Pence, who's on a visit to Seoul, has also warned North Korea not to test America's resolve by continuing to pursue its nuclear programme.

The Prime Minister Bill English says it's good to see the Chinese and United States leadership in communication over North Korea.

He told Morning Report China has the opportunity to put economic pressure on North Korea and seem to be doing so.

PAY EQUITY

The Prime Minister, Bill English, says settling an historic pay equity case will be before Cabinet this afternoon and the Government may make an announcement today.

In 2013 caregiver, Kristine Bartlett, successfully argued in the Employment Court her low hourly pay rate was a result of gender discrimination under the Equal Pay Act.

Ms Bartlett's claim argued that if the female-dominated caregiver sector employed mostly men, they would be paid at a higher rate.
