'Grim discoveries' expected in Houston after flood

From Morning Report, 6:42 am on 31 August 2017

Water's slowly starting to recede in parts of flood-ravaged Texas, but the dangers are far from over. The storm is making its second landfall, now in Louisiana.

More than 32,000 people are in shelters around Houston; almost 10,000 people have already been rescued and 14,000 national guard troops have been activated to help the rescue.

US correspondent for the Guardian Rory Carroll is in Houston. He says fragments of humanity are beginning to return, along with some sun.

"There's a mixture now of people bracing themselves for grim discoveries, because as water recedes there's the expectation more bodies will be discovered," he says.

He also says a group of young New Zealanders in Texas with the YMCA helped lift spirits with their singing.
