Tolley defends data behind beneficiary drug policy

Just a few days after announcing an election pledge to bust drug dealing gangs the National Party says it wants to do more to stop unemployed young people missing out on jobs because of their drug use.

Social development spokeswoman Anne Tolley says all jobseekers under the age of 25 will get one-on-one case management, and that will include dealing with drug problems.

She says recreation drug use is small part of the problem for under-25 beneficiaries. "It's not just about drugs, for some people it's work experience, et cetera. Recreational drug use is part of it, it's much broader than that."

Challenged on whether the policy is based on data or anecdotal, Ms Tolley says: "It is an indication from the young people themselves... Because we don't have drug testing we didn't have good figures ourselves, so we did do a quick survey."
