Germany's Merkel re-elected, but far-right party rises

From Morning Report, 8:46 am on 25 September 2017

Exit polls for the German election suggest Angela Merkel will be re-elected for her fourth term as Chancellor. Her conservative CDU party gained the most votes, coming in at around 32.5 percent. However, this is significantly down from Germany's last election, which had the party on 41.5 percent of the vote. This time around, the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party (also known as the AfD) looks to have gained hugely with over 13 percent of the vote, meaning a far-right party will be in German parliament for the first time in more than half a century.
