Māori seat for Auckland will need law change

From Morning Report, 6:12 am on 29 September 2017

The fate of a dedicated Māori seat on Auckland Council now depends on the mayor persuading the government to change legislation. Auckland councillors voted ten-to-five during their meeting yesterday, in principle of creating a Māori seat but only if the government changes legislation which freezes the number of council seats at twenty. The council opted not to hold a referendum, fearing it would be divisive and unlikely to succeed.
