Fierce weather downs trees, power lines, causes flooding

Ferocious weather lashed parts of the country overnight. Huge gusts of wind caused power cuts on much of the West Coast and around the top and east of the South Island. There are power lines down, roads are blocked and there is flooding. Gale-force winds and downpours hit Wellington overnight and and strong wind gusts have also been recorded in Christchurch, Hokitika and Waiouru.
