Rail bringing $1.5b in hidden benefits for NZ - study

A study commissioned by KiwiRail and the Transport Agency has found rail provides the country with up to $1.5 billion dollars in hidden benefits. The report cites lower traffic congestion, reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, improved road safety and less spending on road maintenance as areas where rail saves the country money. KiwiRail bosses say those savings don't always show up on the balance sheet. Transport Minister Phil Twyford says the report underlines the need for investment in the rail network. KiwiRail's chief executive Peter Reidy joins us to discuss the results.
