Are our schools providing for Māori students?

From Morning Report, 8:19 am on 15 February 2018

The head of the Education Ministry has conceded the day the education system has been failing Māori students since the day it began.

Iona Holsted told MPs during the Ministry's annual review poor Māori performance in schools was intractable and systemic, and she said research showed some teachers were poor at responding to the identity, culture and language of Māori students.

Ms Holsted told Morning Report understanding Māori students is fundamental to good teaching - and benefits all students.

Joining us with their responses are AUT senior lecturer in Māori Studies Ella Henry, and Post-Primary Teachers' Association President Jack Boyle.
