Privacy concerns raised over youth health survey

From Morning Report, 6:14 am on 19 March 2018

There's been an outcry over a proposal by the Ministry of Social Development to collect young people's names and other details as part of a national health survey. The ministry wanted to look into whether the data it collected in the survey could be linked to Statistics New Zealand's massive research database - known as the IDI. The data is anonymised once it's in the IDI, but to link the survey responses to what's already held about an individual, the ministry would need to get the names, dates of birth and addresses of the young people taking part. The ministry is backing away from the idea, but Tania Pinfold from Rotovegas Youth Health told RNZ social issues reporter Sarah Robson why she thinks it would be a step backwards.
