Algal bloom closes 122 mussel farms in Marlborough Sounds

From Morning Report, 8:54 am on 28 May 2018

More than 100 mussel farms are closed in the Marlborough Sounds after a toxic algae ripped through the region earlier this month - the biggest shutdown the industry has experienced in over a decade. The toxic bloom has turned the Pelorus Sound a murky red, right up to Nydia Bay. At least 122 farms have closed and 128 more further away from the bloom have voluntarily stopped harvesting until it passes.
