Listener Stories

Poetry for John Lennon

From Music 101 9 October 2012

Music 101 held a poetry/haiku/limerick/lyric competition to mark what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday, on October 9th, 2010. Here’s what our listeners wrote:

Winners:

Greg - Christchurch

There once were two fellers called Lennin
Who both loved ideas and a bed in
One played guitar/
The other shot the tsar/
So we know whose band we'd rather play in!

Helen – Palmerston North

Imagine there's no john lennon. It's very hard to do.

And a late entry we liked lots - Fane

A snarky young scouser named John.
Wrote the all time unbeatable song.
In a mind blowing chorus he sang I am the Walruss –
Its a pity the bastard has gone!

And the rest…….

Claire - Auckland

Watchful eyes behind glasses round
Saw the world and he moved it with new sound
His words and thoughts now linger on
You will live forever John

Angela of Liverpool

There was a young lad from Liverpool
Whose philosophies are timeless - still cool

With his three mates from penny lane
The Beatles all shot to mega fame

They taught us all You Need Is Love
We feel Johns grace from the heavens above

As his music still lives on - its relevant to say
We share the groove with the kids of today

John Lennon, in Beatles Heaven.
Thought of often, never forgotten.
Sadly deceased, forever rest in peace.

Suzie

They call it Strawberry Fields
A tranquil place,
Memorial to John Lennon,
Across the road from the hotel
Where he fell to the fatal bullet.

Close by the subway, where
The homeless sleep, hunched
Over warming vents.

We step around them.
What else can we do?

________________

Forty years was far too brief,
Thirty years of empty grief.
What could have been we will never know,
Such genius was never allowed to grow.
Thank you John for the timeless belief.

Blair

Haiku for JL

Imagine, no John!
Oh no, give peace his chance as
I grow old for him…

________________

There once was a young man named John
Who sailed to Hamburg for friendship & song
He always searched for the answer
And settled on love and human nature
Still his legacy goes on & on.

Pam

Imagine mind games;
Nobody told the people
you were on borrowed time.

Working class hero
Singing people power, love;
Stand by me.

How do you sleep, John?
Whatever gets you through the night
beautiful boy.

Sally

A Rhyme for John Lennon
Singer Song Writer for ALL TIME

It's so sad that you have gone
But your memories and music carry on

Your music.........
WOW!
We're still crazy about it now

Can't imagine all the people
living in a world
that didn't know John Lenon
or the Beatles
What a sound!!!!!!!!!

Arvensis
