Jean McAlister musical career began as a teenager at Carmen's Coffee Lounge in Wellington. She played keyboards and guitar in the band that supported Red Mole. In the late 70s the theatrical troupe, with band in tow, made their way to the US. They became college radio favourites and released two albums. Since returning to New Zealand in the late 80s, McAlister has worked again with Red Mole, with Linn Lorkin in Happy Talk, and written and performed music for theatre, documentaries, and the children's theatre company the Aunties.
