Grada, a Dublin-based band which includes a couple of Kiwis
Ceol Aneas is an Irish music festival in Nelson, which developed from a series of classes set up to learn Irish instruments. These proved popular among the many New Zealanders for whom Irish music carries a cultural resonance.
Now in its tenth year, Ceol Aneas brings together musicians from all over to learn traditional Irish tunes and songs, through a weekend of instrument classes, informal sessions, and concerts by internationally renowned Irish and folk music specialists.
Special guests this year come from Ireland and Australia, and include Grada, a Dublin-based band which includes a couple of Kiwis - Gerry Paul on guitar, and Andy Laking on double bass. The band has its own modern slant on Irish music.
Kirsten Johnstone visits Ceol Aneas to learn some jigs and reels, find out about session etiquette and attend a Ceili Mor.
