Studio One founder and pioneering kingpin of Jamaican music, Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd, has had a profound effect on popular music over the past fifty years. His recordings with the Skatalites, Bob Marley, Burning Spear and Horace Andy were instrumental in the birth of ska, reggae and dancehall.

Before the development of these quintessentially Jamaican styles, Coxsone ran a franchise of soundsystems with his Mum, Doris Darlington,  and recorded local versions of jump blues with musicians found at a local school ‘for wayward boys’.

Emma Smith talks with Soul Jazz Records founder Stuart Baker about these fascinating formative recordings, collected for the first time in the new compilation Coxsone’s Music.
