Renowned as much for his prolific and genre-bending output as for being a curmudgeonly recluse, Stephin Merritt's career hit a high point when, in the year two thousand, his group The Magnetic Fields released the ambitious triple album '69 Love Songs'. While the songs are entirely penned by Merritt (who also plays everything from ukulele to an assortment of synthesizers) the Magnetic Fields' core membership is rounded out by cellist Sam Davol, guitarist John Woo, and multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and manager - Claudia Gonson. 'Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields' is a documentary that follows the band both on tour and in the studio. Matthew Crawley asked Claudia Gonson about the experience.
