Apanui Matariki in Session

Ngahiwi Apanui was a founding member of Maori reggae group Aotearoa. From about 1983 til '88 The band included a future who's who of Maori music, including Maaka McGregor of Wai, Ruia Aperahama, opera singer Mere Boynton, and Moana Maniapoto Jackson. An ambassador for Te Reo Maori and organiser of the Pao Pao Pao maori music festival, Ngahiwi Apanui released his fourth solo album in June 2011. It's called Matariki, so Music 101 host Kirsten Johnstone invited him into the studio to perform some of the waiata, and find out why the maori new year - marked by the rising of the star constellation Matariki or the seven sisters - means so much to Apanui. The songs are: Haruru Ana, Te Marama, and I Toko Ake.
