When the Mint Chicks imploded onstage in 2010, elder Neilson brother Ruban went back to Portland with his wife and children to concentrate on his design career. But music snuck back in through the basement... the pop-psychedelia he was making in the early hours was soon picked up by influential blog Pitchfork, and 'Unknown Mortal Orchestra' grew legs of its own. Now signed to indie label Fat Possum Records, the self-titled debut is getting rave reviews, and the band has shows booked until March 2012. But when Gemma Gracewood tries to catch up with bandmates Jacob Portrait, Julian Ehrlich in New York, Ruban is nowhere to be found.
