A very unassuming house is crammed to the roof with immaculately catalogued music on CD and vinyl. It's good stuff too... The latest in UK dubstep on wax, the rarest and most delectable rare-groove re-issues and more metal than Jeffrey Stothers and Pip Ryan at Southbound Distribution have room for. So why do we hear a constant thrum of bad news from people involved in making, distributing and retailing music sold as traditional formats? Jeffrey and Pip are sanguine about the state of the business but with an unquenchable passion for the product and a well-trained nose for a popular title they're finding business is steady, if not spectacular. Nick Atkinson visits the suburban base of Southbound's operations, where he is just as impressed with the spectacular home-baking as with the fresh new music stacked neatly inside. He then visits Cian, manager of Conch Records on Ponsonby Road, Auckland.
