Dirty Projectors is the vehicle for the songs of David Longstreth. Together with his girlfriend Amber Coffman, the Brooklyn based band has released lofty conceptual albums - an album that covers the songs of Black Flag re-interpreted from memory, an album about Don Henley from the Eagles. They've collaborated on songs with David Byrne and Bjork. Their 2009 album Bitte Orca put them firmly on the indie rock map, with their postmodernist mix of African rhythms, melismas Beyonce would be proud of, angular, scattered melodies and outbursts of muscular guitar. Last year Dirty Projectors released Swing Lo Magellen - a collection of songs recorded in a house in upstate New York. The six piece were here this week playing Auckland and Wellington, Kirsten Johnstone met Longstreth before the gig and started by asking how much input the band had in the songwriting process
