8:30 Phil Garland tribute

The man they called 'the father of New Zealand folk music'  Phil Garland , died this week at the age of 75. 
Although he was considered our foremost authority on musical folklore, Phil actually began his musical career in rock-n-roll before he developed a love of Kiwi heritage, and became an industrious folklorist and musical balladeer.

As a tribute, we're going to draw on a studio session that only radio listeners  have heard before. It was a little over seven years ago when Wayne Mowat asked Phil Garland  to bring his guitar into the studio and talk about a book reflecting his musical journey through New Zealand's past.

The Meyers started selling their gouda cheese to the people of Hamilton 34 years ago...the uninitiated found the rind a bit chewy! Now three of Ben and Fieke Meyers four children work in the family business and this week Meyer Cheese picked up another string of awards at the New Zealand Cheese Awards.  And... two families at Conway Flat in North Canterbury run a hill country walkway that goes from windy hilltops to the cliffed coastline connecting their sheep and beef farms.
